This section of the module provides teachers with activities that allow students to read the fossil record and understand how fossil age is measured. Because students tend to view time in the context of their short lives, it is often difficult for them to understand the enormous amount of time that has passed before them. The Time String provides students with a concrete example of how much time passed in each of several geologic periods and where living things fit. Time Conceptualization helps the student connect his life and the life span of his ancestors in a way that he or she begins to recognize how much time has actually passed before them.
