Activity Description of "Zoophyla"

| Abstract | Oh, how to teach the end of the year when you have everything else (the whole animal kingdom) to cover and everyone is tired of listening to you? I have devised an animal phyla symposium/presentation where my students teach each other the various phyla. We have PowerPoint software and a digital camera available in our science tech lab and I have incorporated the use of this for their presentations. You can simply edit the file and change it to whatever meets your needs. I have also included a grading rubric.
I also do a dichotomous key animal ID lab between all these presentations, which helps the hands-on learners. It can be done either through keying and identifying specimens and writing their characteristics, or by more of an inquiry -problematic approach. In this students group similar specimens together, investigate words to describe the characteristics they share, and create their own dichotomous key. Enjoy :-) Rosie |
