Polio?

"I think it's polio," you say. "High fever is one of the early stages of the disease."

William frowns. "But the symptoms that followed don't seem right, eh? Polio causes paralysis. Hands and feet go limp. But the doctor never said anything about that."

"You would think he'd notice," Claudia agrees. "Especially if he died from it."

"I do believe there is a common cause that fits the symptoms," William says thoughtfully. "A thumping deadly thing." He is peering at his piece of paper.

"You keep jotting on that," Claudia observes. "Are you ever going to twig us what it's about?"

"It's a chart," William says. "A chart of the mystery." He lays it on the table, and you and Claudia crowd around him for a look.
