Among the wad of Master's documents
you sent us, we discovered a handwritten note. We have fully reconstructed
the message.
"13 Feb 1834. I respectfully notify
my Captain and shipmates that I have parted company.
I am aware of the seriousness of my act and accept full responsibility.
I have only taken enough food for two months, an ax, one rifle,
and one of the sledges. I say this honestly, I am not scheming
to deprive others of
their share. If any one person in the expedition wishes to join
me, they may do so. If they have half a wit left, they will know
where I have gone. But I frankly
doubt that this is the case.
Terrible Harding
Lieutenant, Royal Navy."
