Birds of Paradise by example...
Now, I'm going to show you three slides of my favorite group, or one of my favorite groups, which are the birds of paradise. The only reason I'm showing you these pretty pictures is that there have been described a certain number of species in this group using a biological species concept but they can be reanalyzed from a different perspective, but birds of paradise are great. I'm not going to talk very much about them today but they all are found on New Guinea, Australia or the surrounding islands. These birds with the long red or yellow tails, and the blue bird in the upper right-hand corner, are in the genus Paradisea, In the upper left-hand corner, we have these amazing species with these very long tails, the astrapias.
In this slide we have several other kinds of birds of paradise. In the upper right-hand corner we have the Wonderful King 0f Saxony Bird of Paradise and just below it is Queen Carola's Parotia. The small little brightly colored birds with wire-like tails include at the bottom-left the Wilson's Bird of Paradise, then above it the Magnificent Bird of Paradise, then in the center the King Bird of Paradise.
