NHM Health Focus:
Children's Health Month
October 2008
|
|
Children's health, while recognized in October, is important all year long! Many excellent resources aimed directly at kids, tweens and teens
are available from federal agencies, especially the U. S. Department
of Health and Human Services (HHS),
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),
the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Check "just
for kids" health sites from the U. S. Government. Most of the time you'll also find a corner dedicated
to parents or teachers.
Here are some good places to begin:
- HHS Pages for Kids sponsored
by the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
feature age appropriate information, activities and resources to help
kids, tweens and teens learn about, and take responsibility for, their
own health.
- NIEHS Kids' Pages
include stories, games, activities and more from the National Institute
of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)
- BAM! Body and Mind, is an online
destination for kids created by the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC). Designed for kids
9-13 years old, BAM! Body and Mind provides the information kids need
to make healthy lifestyle choices.
- Girls
Health, sponsored by the National Women's Health Information Center
(NWHIC), promotes healthy, positive
behaviors in girls between the ages of 10 and 16. The site "gives
girls reliable, useful information on the health issues they will
face as they become young women, and tips on handling relationships
with family and friends, at school and at home."
- FDA Kids
from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
has activities for kids, information for teens and resources for parents
and teachers. Part of this site, Health
Information for Teens, addresses issues of particular concern to
teens.
Reliable, accessible health resources for and about kids, tweens and
teens are also available from non-government agencies and groups, such
as the following:
- Infection
Detection Protection is a family magazine designed by the American
Museum of Natural History (AMNH)
to help students, families and teachers understand what causes infectious
disease and what they can do to help prevent it.
- KidsHealth and TeenHealth
sponsored by the Nemours
Foundation, written and reviewed by pediatricians, provides reliable
health related information for kids, teens and for parents.
- AE Question of the Week includes background information and a series of thought provoking discussion questions that address child, tween and teen health issues. Each week, our Health Community Coordinator emails a Question-of-the-Week to those who request inclusion on the email list. These emails are archived and posted online.
