PROCEDURE:
- Review with students the concept of contrasting characteristics.
Introduce the
traits to be studied and the codes for the alternative states of each
trait (Table
below). Distribute Student Profile worksheets, if available (Student
Profile sheets
may be downloaded and copied, or may be sent as ClarisWorks files on
request
from ktnoon72@ix.netcom.com).
- Assign each student an identification number. Have students assess
and record
their traits on the student profile sheets.
- Set up a spreadsheet to receive the class data. The spreadsheet
should have 35
columns: A= I.D. number, B = first name, C = last name, D = School, E
= teacher's
name, F = sex, G = Age to nearest 100th of a year. Columns H through
AJ are
described in the Trait Description Table below. Letters in the left
column refer
to the column headings of the spreadsheet. (ClarisWorks spreadsheets
will be
sent on request by ktnoon72@ix.netcom.com)
- Enter the data for each student into the spreadsheet. Teachers will be
responsible for proofing
and screening the data. Compute the frequency of each trait, (that is, add the total number of entries for a trait) divided by the number of students assessed for that trait), and
enter this frequency (e.g. 20% W) into a
final row on the spreadsheet. Compute the frequency of colorblindness separately for males and females and enter it in clearly marked cells under the overall data for these traits. Compute the average stature, span, and
stature/span separately for males and females and enter into clearly marked cells under the overall data
for these traits.
The frequencies and
averages
may be calculated by hand if computers are not available.
- Copy the class spreadsheet. Delete student names from 1 copy, and
send it
to ktnoon72@ix.netcom.com. The case by case data will be read
into a database
for future hypothesis testing. Summary statistics for schools
without
spreadsheets will also be posted. Send to
ktnoon72@ix.netcom.com. School
summaries will be posted as they are received in the Let's
Collaborate area.
