This program supports the development and dissemination of secondary hands-on biotechnology curricula and related inquiry-based teaching strategies. In January 1996, a secondary school teacher and a college professor will develop inexpensive classroom activities incorporating the Internet, laboratory equipment, and computers. The curricula will focus on the role of biotechnology in terms of the environment, medicine, preservation of plant species, and agriculture. The activities then will be tested for accuracy by the scientists at Life Technologies, Inc.
In the summer of 1996, nine secondary school teachers and nine two-year college faculty members will provide the accompanying pedagogy for the developed curricula. Participants will explore each classroom unit and establish related hands-on teaching strategies. The results will be published in a teachers' manual and will include modifications for physically challenged, gifted and traditionally underserved students. In addition, the program will establish a professional network among two-year college faculty, secondary school teachers, and industries.
Developed activities will be refined, reviewed for scientific accuracy and pedagogy, and field tested by two review panels. Five training sites also will be established in Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, Oregon, and Texas to disseminate the result. The manual will be available from the project.
