Brief Biography-Randall E. (Randy) Raymond

I have a B.S. and M.S. in Biology and an Ed.D in Science Education. I have worked as a research scientist for the National Park Service, and have assisted many students in the completion of national and international award winning science fair projects.

I am currently the Project Director of the Urban Environmental Education in Detroit (UEEID) program which I developed for the Detroit Public Schools system. In addition to my work with UEEID, I also teach biology and chemistry at Cass Technical High School in Detroit. In the UEEID program I have worked to develop a community based, real world problem solving applications course that makes use of geographic information systems. Students in the UEEID program were instrumental in helping the City of Detroit obtain a $100 million Empowerment Zone designation. Four of the UEEID students are the current National Championship Environmental Science Team from the Seiko Youth Challenge. The UEEID program in collaboration with The University of Michigan School of Public Health, City of Detroit Health Department and Henry Ford Health System just received notification of a $2 million five year award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to develop a Community Based Academic Health Research Center in the City of Detroit.

In addition to my work in education, I am the father of 5 daughters. One is completing her M.S. degree at Indiana University in Environmental Education, and another is a freshman at BYU working on a degree in computer based information management systems (GIS). I also have a daughter who is a high school sophomore, one who is an eighth grader and another who is a third grade student in the talent and gifted program of Southfield Public Schools. I am an activist in Native American rights and work with a number of Native American organizations. I enjoy traveling throughout the U.S. with my family, camping and exploring the environment. I ride my mountain bike as often as time permits. I am always looking for new ways to make educational experiences more meaningful for my children and students.
