CBL Interfacing

Calculator-Based Laboratory System - (CBL)

Texas Instruments' Calculator-Based Laboratory System (CBL) provides a portable and versatile data collection device for science programs. Most of the Vernier probes, such as a pH system, Colorimeter, Heart Rate Monitor, and Barometer, can be connected to the CBL interface. The CBL is connected to a TI-82 or TI-85/CBL Graphics Calculator through the communication port found at the bottom edge of the calculator. Data collection with the CBL is controlled by programs on the calculator.

Since the CBL is battery powered, it can be taken out of the classroom for experiments such as monitoring the temperature and pH of a stream. Within the classroom, the CBL provides a low-cost alternative to the use of computers.

Data can be collected as quickly as 10,000 points per second or as slowly as one sample every 4 hours. It is also possible to simultaneously collect data from five channels. You can collect data in real time and plot the data on the calculator as it is collected. Since the CBL has its own microprocessor and memory, it can be disconnected from the calculator, allowing it to act as a stand-alone data logger.

The CBL can be powered by an AC adapter. This will help you save on batteries and is especially valuable during long-term data collection. Note: This adapter does NOT ship with the CBL - it must be purchased separately. Too bad they considered this optional.

One other inexpensive optional part you will need is an adapter to allow the Vernier probes to work with the CBL. If you do not purchase these adapters, you will only be able to use the few analog probes (temperature and light) that ship with the CBL. I recommend having 3-4 adapters per CBL. With these, you can take simultaneous measurements with up to three analog devices and have an extra in case you misplace one (someone will!).
