CBL Interfacing

Calculators

We recommend using the TI 82 or a more recent, similar model, the TI 83 when setting up a Calculator Based Laboratory. The TI 85 and TI 92 can also be used with much of the probeware discussed on this forum, but the facilitators are less familiar with their use at this time. Therefore the following discussion is limited to the TI 82/83.

TI-82 Graphics Calculator

The TI-82 is suggested for use with the CBL. Two features make it better suited for this environment:

  • It displays the lists in a spreadsheet manner, which allows you to easily look at and edit more than one list at a time; and
  • The trace mode in the 82 allows you to read individual data points when they are displayed on the screen.

Neither of these features are available in the TI-85.

The TI-82 calculator is fully compatible with the CBL system. Programs entered on the calculator control the data gathering process on the CBL. The calculator also supports interactive graphical analysis and data analysis features, including data input of up to 99 entries in six lists, eight regression models, and four types of data plots. It is also possible to split the screen, displaying both a graph and a data table.

TI-85/CBL Graphics Calculator

This calculator contains programming commands making it compatible with the CBL. Note, however, that it lacks several features the TI-82 has (above). The calculator provides access to more lists, with the length of the lists limited only by the available memory.
