The Limits of Knowing

Epistemology is the study of knowledge: the scope and limits of what can be known. It comes from the Greek noun 'episteme' meaning knowledge, from the verb 'epistanai' meaning to understand, to know; from 'epi-' and 'histanai' meaning to cause to stand. An irony: one thing a scientist needs to do is to stand up for what one knows.
