Herbert W. Boyer is professor emeritus of biochemistry and biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco. In 1973 Boyer, with Stanley Cohen of Stanford University, pioneered the field of cloning. Their work led to the founding of companies such as Genentech, Inc.. Boyer is a director of Genentech, Inc., which he co-founded in 1976 with Robert Swanson.
Boyer received both his MS and PhD in bacteriology from the University of Pittsburgh. He is the recipient of the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology, and he is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
Boyer is also president of the Marin Theater Company in Mill Valley, California, a classic car afficianado, a pilot, golfer, runner and fisherman extraordinaire.
