Abstract

This video series is composed of six, ten minute programs. Each program traces a portion of the process of cellular respiration using animation. Program 1 "The Cell and Energy" and provides a general introduction to the subject of energy. It introduces respiration, the structure of mitochondria and cells, the theory of the evolution of mitochondria from independent organisms, the relationship of plants and animals through the similarity of photosynthesis and respiration. It introduces the role and structure of glucose and ATP in cellular respiration. Program 2 "Glycolysis 1" begins by identifying glucose and glycogen as the energy storage molecules. It then takes you through glycolysis step by step, describing the first five coupled reactions, showing the reactants and products, and the use and production of ATP. Program 3 "Glycolysis 2" and picks up the process at the step where phosphoglyceraldehyde is produced and continues the reactions to its conversion to pyruvic acid. The program describes the structure and importance of NAD, the importance of anaerobic fermentation and accounts for the net gain of ATP during glycolysis and uses energy diagrams trace the energy changes at each step of glycolysis. Program 4 "The Krebs Cycle" begins with the importance of the process of glycolysis to the emergence of life on land. The program traces the sequence of reactions in the Krebs cycle beginning with the formation of acetyl Co A and ending with the end products. In between it examines each reaction showing energy carriers and ATP. Program 5 "Oxidative Phosphorylation explains the electron transport chain and the role of oxygen, the production of the mitochondrial energy gradient and the process of ATP production. Program 6 "Metabolism and Nutrition" deals with the use of ATP by the body, muscle operation, effects of oxygen deprivation, and storage of excess ATP as fat.

Evaluation Comments

The ten minute format of the programs is a real plus. Each program treats a portion of the cellular respiration in easily understood animated format. The animation takes the student into every facet of the cellular respiration process in great detail and in a manner that is easily understood. The programs are ideal pre and post lecture activities. The teachers guide contains numerous pre and post viewing activities that reinforce the topics in each program. The programs are especially valuable for individual students who are struggling over particular segments of the process. Absent students can quickly and easily review any material they have missed and review previously covered material. I make videos available for students to review in small groups or individually before school , during study hall, or for check out overnight. This is one video I show the day before the A.P. test
